Simplex

About

Simplex is a puzzle platformer that you can download right now, it's available on Google Play. I decided to make it a mobile game since I never published a mobile game before (or planned to make one). During the game's development, I also wanted to record the creation of the game's base mechanics and turn them into a time lapse video series to have some material to promote it with once it was done. I made all the artwork, game design and code of the game, while the music was made by someone else willingful enough to help me out since it was created in my spare time while working on Two Sides Of Hell.

Technical Aspects

On the technical side of things, the game was rather simple to code. I used Unity Engine with Unity Remote to develop and test, while the planning was mostly done in the Game Design Document I wrote before starting the project. The true challenge was in the levels, where I had some trouble in balancing the difficulty between levels and come up with more ideas. Afterall, the game doesn't even contain any text. When I finished all levels, the amount of satisfaction was just worthwhile. I didn't rely on any sort of assets from the asset store, as everything is my own craft.

Gameplay

When designing this game, I got inspired by a few videos made by Game Maker's Tooklit on YouTube. He said something along the lines of removing an important aspect of a game genre to make it unique, so I removed all the text possible. I tried my best to communicate with the player through visual feedback and symbols and utilised a general puzzle structure of keys, buttons and whatnot. When I made my friends test this game during development, I found out that they where more entertained when they figured everything out by themselves, so I felt confident about finishing the whole project. I made only 20 levels since I really wanted to go aboard and create a fully functional concept of a 3D racing system with AI and abilities (See Racing Game project for more info).
